Stone Skipping Hall of Fame

Mackinac Island

Nomination Process

The following is the nomination process for nominating an individual for enshrinement in the Hall of Fame

PURPOSE

The Mackinac Island Stone Skipping Hall of Fame (hereafter MISSHOF) recognizes and honors competitors, officials, and others who have made outstanding contributions to the sport of Stone Skipping.

The Hall of Fame is a vehicle to inform the general public of the achievements of Stone Skippers and to provide recognition of the sport’s most outstanding individuals. It is also an important means of preserving the most notable aspects of the heritage of Stone Skipping.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates must meet the following requirements in order to be eligible for enshrinement into the MISSHOF.

Competitor
A stone skipper must have competed from a minimum of 5 years and be fully retired for two years before being eligible for enshrinement. They may then be considered for enshrinement in the third year of retirement. Should a stone skipper come out of retirement for a short period of time, as defined by the MISSHOF, their case and eligibility for enshrinement shall be reviewed on an individual basis.

Official
An official must be fully retired for two years or, if still an active official, have been an active official for a minimum of 10 years. That person will then be considered for enshrinement in the third year of retirement or 11th year of officiating.

Contributor
A person is eligible for enshrinement as a contributor at any time for significant contributions to the sport of Stone Skipping. What constitutes a “significant contribution” shall be determined by the MISSHOF Screening and Honors Committees.

PROCESS OVERVIEW

An overview of the annual nomination through induction process is depicted below.

NOMINATION PROCESS

The submission of a nomination is referred to as a Cast. A Nomination Packet consists of a completed nomination form procured from the MISSHOF and news clippings, magazine articles or other informative, factual data about the candidate. This material shall be submitted to the MISSHOF Director during the period beginning October 1 and ending October 31. All nominees with completed nomination materials are presented to the Screening Committee for review.

SCREENING COMMITTEE

The Screening Committee will review casts and recommend individuals to be reviewed for enshrinement by the Honors Committee. The Screening Committee consists of 3 individuals. To advance to the Honors Committee, an individual requires a minimum number of 2 Plinks (affirmative votes) from the Screening Committee.

If an individual does not receive a single Plink (affirmative vote) that individual is said to have Cast a Skronker. If a candidate casts a skronker two years in a row their candidacy is suspended for three years after which time the candidate may again resume the casting process. The Screening Committee may put forth a maximum number of 3 finalists to the Honors Committee.

HONORS COMMITTEE

The purpose of the Honors Committee is to review carefully a candidate’s Stone Skipping record before casting a vote in favor (plink) of enshrining the person into the MISSHOF.

There are 9 people on the Honors Committee. They include members of the Screening Committee, Hall of Famers, Stone Skipping officials, media members and other contributors to the sport. A person needs a minimum of 6 Pitty-Pats (affirmative votes) from the Honors Committee to be enshrined into the MISSHOF. If a candidate does not receive 6 pitty-pats, they are said to have Plonked Out.

If a candidate plonks out at the Honors Committee for two consecutive years, their candidacy will be suspended for three years and may not cast during this time. Following this three-year period, the candidate will be eligible to resume casting to be reconsidered by the Screening Committee.

INDUCTION

After the vote of the Honors Committees, those candidates who have been elected for enshrinement (at least two Plinks and six Pitty-Pats) will be inducted into the MISSHOF at the next annual Mackinac Island Stone Skipping and Gerplunking Club Winter Rules Committee meeting.

ENSHRINEMENT

Inducted candidates will be enshrined on the MISSHOF website (http://MISSHOF.com).
